His name doesn’t roll off everyone’s tongue (like The Beatles), but this great talent made a dozen studio albums (plus the requisite live and compilation sets) over his lifetime. His name is Warren Zevon (Zivotovsky), born in Chicago, USA on 24 January 1947 and dying on 7 September 2003.
He was a great friend of the Everly Brothers, Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, Don Henley, Joe Walsh, Tom Petty and Billy Bob Thornton, plus many other music industry legends. He used their talents on many of his recordings; some artists sang his songs on their own albums.
He wrote some classic songs: Poor Poor Pitiful Me; Excitable Boy; Carmelita; Hasten Down The Wind; Lawyers, Guns And Money; plus many bizarre ones, including Werewolves Of London; The French Inhaler; Detox Mansion and Roland The Headless Thompson Gunner. This man was a prolific and songwriting genius – check out some of these for yourself.
Actually, his last compilation release was called Genius (2002) – a great collection of some of his songs over the decades – plus Preludes (2007), a two-CD collection of rare and previously unreleased songs, which was put together by his son, Jordan (or Johnny Son, as Warren called him) – fabulous stuff!

When he was diagnosed with mesothelioma he declined any sort of treatment, favouring to finish his last album The Wind. Two weeks after its release, he died.
This insidious disease lies dormant for decades and cuts people down from all walks of life – like Warren Zevon.
It’s not just those unfortunate people who worked with Asbestos, but it can be anyone who came in contact with it at anytime in their lives.
